          Extant early British ballads s from an old manuscript collection of poetry, rescued in Humphrey Pitt's house at Shifnal, by Thomas Percy. from the hands of the housemaid who was about to light the fire with it."( Some pages had already been used previously to heat the house.) Selections from ‘Reliques of Ancient Poetry ‘ Edward Walford- Chandos 1880 and from Bell’s English Poets. A collection of old heroic ballads, songs, etc.  Note: The earliest ballads are written in ‘Olde’ English and in early dialect. Where possible I have added notes to explain either the source or the meaning of obscure names or words of that era to assist the reader. Edited and abridged with new annotations Robert D. Morritt
